How Mutual Funds Are Taxed (FY 2025-26 / 2026-27)

A general summary of current capital gains rules. Tax laws change with each Union Budget — always confirm current rates with a tax advisor before making a decision.

Fund CategoryShort-TermLong-Term
Equity Funds (≥65% equity) 20% (held ≤12 months) 12.5% on gains above ₹1.25 lakh/year (held >12 months), no indexation
Debt Funds Bought before 1 Apr 2023: Taxed as long-term capital gains at 20% with indexation if held >36 months, otherwise at your slab rate. Bought on/after 1 Apr 2023: Taxed at your slab rate regardless of holding period — no LTCG/STCG distinction, no indexation.
Hybrid Funds Taxed as equity if ≥65% equity allocation; taxed as debt/specified fund otherwise
Gold / Silver Funds Bought before 1 Apr 2023: Taxed as long-term capital gains at 20% with indexation if held >36 months, otherwise at your slab rate (the older gold/debt-fund rule). Bought on/after 1 Apr 2023: Historically taxed at slab rate regardless of holding period as a "specified mutual fund"; recent Finance Act changes have moved some of these toward a 12.5% long-term rate (without the equity exemption) after a longer holding threshold — this area has changed more than once, so please confirm current treatment with a tax advisor.
International / Global Funds Bought before 1 Apr 2023: Taxed as long-term capital gains at 20% with indexation if held >36 months, otherwise at your slab rate. Bought on/after 1 Apr 2023: Historically taxed at slab rate regardless of holding period as a "specified mutual fund", with the same recent shifts as Gold/Silver funds above — confirm current treatment with a tax advisor.

Rates shown exclude applicable surcharge and 4% Health & Education Cess. A 10% TDS applies on dividend (IDCW) payouts exceeding ₹10,000 per fund house per year (Section 194K). ELSS funds qualify for up to ₹1.5 lakh deduction under Section 80C (old tax regime) with a 3-year lock-in. 1 April 2023 is the cutoff introduced by the Finance Act 2023 for "specified mutual funds" (funds with under 35% domestic equity, which includes most debt, gold, silver, and international funds) — units bought before that date keep the older indexation-based rule even if sold now. Gold, Silver, and International fund taxation specifically has been revised more than once since — treat the summary above as a starting point for discussion with a tax advisor, not a final answer.

Risk Disclaimer: Mutual Fund investments are subject to market risks. Please read all scheme-related documents carefully before investing. Each scheme's official factsheet displays a SEBI-mandated Riskometer, updated monthly by the AMC, reflecting that specific scheme's risk level. Please check the actual fund's Riskometer or consult a SEBI-registered financial advisor before investing.
